How Disc Brakes Travail

Vespa disc brake kit

We sent out a note to all our defunct customers of our Vespa disc brake kit and have put up some feedback:

Vespa disc brake kitGreat gig, great to have good brakes.Great stopping power and the control was nice and easy to fit. Just as good as the Lambretta one I bought from yourselves 2 years ago.Looks well made, finished and actual quality.I installed the ScootRS Vespa disc brake on my Vespa VBB. We did a few modifications on the headset and inured to a PX fork. It's working well and improved dramatically the safety features of the bike.I muse over that braking power and control is better than the Grimeca for the Vespa PX My as the floating understudy caliper and the disc construction you use is much better.

ScootRS have had some real wins lately. I have in my hands two Vietnamese Vespa disc hold up conversions. One is the scootRS [high-pressurecast] one and the other is a sandcast one. I'll bestowal the scootRS 9 points and the sandcast one 5 points.

It's a quality offshoot ready to bolt on with no need to tart it up. I'll be using it with scootRS [tubeless] rims.

Here's a photo someone sent in on a VBB with a PK fork conversion, and clearly needing a disc brake for a camping trip!

Vespa disc brake kit on VBB

We also received a duo tips which we've added to the installation page.

We still haven't put the 16mm side up for sale yet, sorry. We currently have 3 disc brake projects almost done, and that is one of them. No fixture yet, sorry. We'll release it when we're happy with it.

Brake Rotor: Key Part of Mercedes Brake System

Slow up rotors are the rotating discs on the Mercedes-Benz disc restriction system. They are mounted on the Mercedes Benz drive train and furnish a clamping surface for the brake pads. When you step on the constraint pedal, the foot pressure is transmitted hydraulically by the teacher cylinder to a push rod connected to the caliper-driven rein pads. Depending on the foot pressure input, the caliper then squeezes on the decelerate rotors and retards the motion of the car.

The disc brake system of the Mercedes Benz works in criterion like the brakes on a bicycle. But, since cars need more braking power, the caliper in the disc slow assembly clamps on the rotor to apply restraint on the wheels a substitute alternatively of a caliper tightening on the wheel itself. Aside from improved braking power, the Mercedes Benz disc decelerate assembly spares the wheels from the resulting friction.

Operationally, the restraint rotors are exposed to high heat condition. Most Mercedes Benz rein rotors are made of cast iron to withstand the heat and dissension against the brake pads. But the chronic contact between the two makes them favourably disposed to regular replacement and maintenance. Brake pads are one of the upkeep items in a Mercedes Benz that require periodic replacement, while hold up rotors often have a long service life.

Replacement slow pad sets are categorized as per drive applications. Brake pads with harder and less forward compounds are designed for Mercedes Benz cars toughened in city driving. Using this kind of friction real on performance cars can result in brake fade. Sprint cars, or performance Mercedes Benz cars for that sum, are fitted with a brake pad set lined with soft and more aggressive chafing material like asbestos, Aramid, etc. Driving look and preferences are often valid considerations when deciding on brake pad replacement.

Because most rein pads are equipped with aggressive friction compounds, slow rotors are periodically flipped to make rotor chafing even. However, turning the brake rotors can reduce their ability to nature heat in the high-friction operating condition. Animate buildup between the brake rotors and the brake pads can “pervert” or reshape the brake rotors, causing thickness variations. When this happens, you get a pedal pulsation, and sometimes, a knock in the steering wheel. When the brake rotors get worn over every now, they do not only get thin but lose the heat ventilations on their contact surface. This ventilation exhausts contention heat via the holes that are cross-drilled on the discs.

Trike trickery

big_main.jpg I'm mechanically sloping. Which means that I am not afraid of breaking things.

My primary vogue of transport is a big honking Space Blue Greenspeed GTO. [See it here in its Stately Tour Configuration] In keeping with its big honking status, it uses Magura BIG disc brakes. They're hydraulic, and served me well while I careened down mountains towing a trailer with 75 pounds of mat in it.

Several weeks ago, the right brake lever started prosperous a bit mushy, and I noticed a bit of fluid on the cable housing attached the caliper...eventually, I had to squeeze the lever almost all the way in just to get the pads to attract. I needed to bleed the brake, because it was obvious that the fluid had hand the system. So I got the bleed kit, and then spent a couple of weeks reading the instructions, looking at the brakes, and deciding that I would do it later. I've worked on kosher brakes often enough that I was able to talk my ex through adjusting her brakes on the West Side Highway bike track in New York City via cellphone while I was on top of a mountain in Kentucky. But hydraulics were virgin territory, full of mysterious oils and unknown expense.

Last end of day I finally decided to do the deed, and hooked up the various fittings and tubes and syringes. The fundamental procedure involves pumping fluid into the system from the bottom, sucking off the superabundance when it comes out the top, then cycling the brake lever to squeeze all the air bubbles out. At one accentuate, I got a little too enthusiastic with the brake lever, which caused one of the pistons to pop out of the caliper. All the hold up fluid dumped out of the reservoir and onto the floor. This meant that I had to disassemble the caliper (shown above) to get the plunger back in, a choice I made after I decided that yes, if I broke something,...
